Trailer tongue battery box3/16/2023 A much smaller and lighter boat yes and then only in ideal conditions.Īlways better to have too much of a winch than not enough.Īny winch bigger than that one is going to require other methods of wiring than the trailer socket. Personally, I would feel uncomfortable using that thing on a 20 foot 2,000 pound boat as they claim it is rated for. I know for a fact that Powerwinch makes a small winch that DOES plug into the 7 pin trailer connector. You're fine and are correct about the 20amp supply on some vehicles. Sounds like this is one of those times where I might sound like I know more than I do! Neither my boat or my rv need anywhere near this much power from the truck so I haven't worried about finding out for sure. I wouldn't have thought that a trailer winch would pull more than 20A, but my boat is almost certainly smaller than what is being discussed here. although I have not verified this, I was under the impression that my truck is capable of supplying 20A of 12v from the 7-pin plug for an RV to use to charge batteries, run reefer, etc. The correct way to do it, ( if you don't want to mount a battery on the trailer tongue ) is to wire the winch directly to the vehicle's battery using the correct wire size with an isolator switch and quick connect plugs at the rear of the vehicle and wire harness for the winch. Some of the larger winches require 8 or even 6 gauge wire. Most winches need a minimum wire size of at least 10 gauge on both the hot and ground leads supplying the winch's power harness. Check the power and wire size requirements of your winch first before using your factory trailer harness. Better Built Trailer Tongue Tool Box, Wide, 39 x 16.5 x 12: Great for storing tie downs, wheel chocks, and other towing items and fits perfectly on most trailers. The preferred method is not to use your vehicles existing harness trailer harness as most will not have large enough wires supplying them. ![]() The 7-pin diagram on this page (scroll down a bit) shows which terminal to use. ![]() You could use a 7-pin rv plug for your trailer and take power from the 12v terminal to power the winch.
